The Storytelling That Named Us
In 2015, Kuching For Me: Storytelling Contest invited Kuchingites to share what the city means to them. From these stories came not only a sense of pride and belonging, but also a new identity for our company. What began as Vanadium Land was reborn as Saradise — a lifestyle developer rooted in community, inspired by heritage, and guided by the people of Sarawak.

In 2015, we invited Kuchingites to join a storytelling contest with a simple prompt: “Kuching for me is…”. What began as an open call for short essays soon became something far greater — it revealed the soul of the city, and in turn, gave us our identity.

At the time, we were known as Vanadium Land, a developer preparing to embark on a 272-acre integrated township. Like many, we could have followed the trend of adopting generic, Western-inspired names. But we wanted something different — something born from Kuching, for Kuching.

Dozens of heartfelt stories emerged — from fond memories of kopitiams and bustling Sunday markets, to reflections on unity across cultures, to dreams of a modern city that still treasures its heritage.

“For me Kuching is home. It has changed a lot with many parts gone or revamped for tourism. What makes it nice is that you don’t feel like you cannot breathe… we are not competing to be another urban jungle.”
— Father Alvin Ng, St Joseph Private School

“Kuching for me is walking around in the sunshine, soaking up the nostalgic atmosphere, stopping here and there to enjoy great local food and watching every moment of city life unfold around me.”
