The Design That Formed Us
n 2017, Kuching For Me: Design Contest transformed community pride into creativity, inviting Kuchingites to reimagine their city through art and design. From sculptures to light installations, the contest proved that culture and identity can shape modern townships. The ideas gathered now live within our developments – from Saradise Edge, where midin’s spiral curves inspire walkways, to Saradise Dreams, whose grandeur reflects the majesty of the Mulu Caves.

In 2017, Kuching For Me returned with a fresh chapter — this time told through the language of art and design. Where the first contest in 2015 uncovered stories, the second evolved into a design competition, inviting Kuchingites and visitors alike to express their dream for Kuching in visual form. From sculptures and light installations to illustrations, photography, and mixed media, every piece carried the same heartbeat: pride in Kuching and hope for its future.

At the time, we were known as Vanadium Land, a developer preparing to embark on a 272-acre integrated township. Like many, we could have followed the trend of adopting generic, Western-inspired names. But we wanted something different — something born from Kuching, for Kuching.

More than a competition, this was a community dialogue. Judges — including respected artists and UNIMAS lecturers — evaluated submissions on creativity, execution, and Sarawak identity. The winning and finalist artworks were celebrated in a month-long exhibition at Saradise Gallery, transforming ideas into tangible experiences for the public.

“We want Kuching to develop, not to be a concrete jungle of squarish buildings, but to have art elements in the design and architecture. Artistic buildings will make Kuching a city with a soul, more liveable, and attract tourists to come and visit.”
— Dato Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports

For Saradise, the contest reaffirmed that development is not just about building structures, but about weaving culture and identity into the urban fabric. Inspiration drawn from Sarawak’s cuisine, flora, and traditions now lives within our township designs — from public art installations to streetscapes that carry the rhythm of Sarawak. The flooring patterns at Saradise Edge mimic the graceful spiral curves of our local midin, while Saradise Dreams draws its grandeur from the majestic Mulu Caves. These details highlight what sets Saradise apart as a lifestyle developer: creating places where creativity, heritage, and community thrive together – and where investors see authentic long-term value.
